Is Artificial intelligence all that?

Is Artificial intelligence all that? What I mean by that is AI is a good thing. I want to examine whether AI is a good or bad thing for us.

Artificial Intelligence in Fiction

The Terminator

Many of us who are fans of Science fiction remember the first time we saw Terminator 1, Terminator 2, Terminator etc… they were fun to watch and looking back maybe a little scary about how mankind let a computer AI system take control of the nuclear weapons, who then turned-on mankind to destroy them. The Terminator (1984) – Plot – IMDb

Artificial intelligence in the Matrix

In most of the films I have seen about AI, the system turns against its creator and tries to kill them in the bloodiest ways. We have seen AI running a dystopian world in The Matrix, where humans are nothing more than a battery to enable the AI robots to survive after mankind tried to block the sun to stop the Matrix from generating electricity by solar power.

2001: A Space Odyssey

In 2001: a space odyssey David Bowman, who was an astronaut aboard Discovery One, was controlled by HAL 9000. A computer/Artificial intelligence that ran the ship.

As the story progresses, we see that HAL turns from being a helpful Artificial intelligence to assist David Bowman to become a creature of menace and murder, killing the crew in the suspended animation pods by turning off the life support system.

After Dr Bowman’s life was put at risk when outside the Odyssey HAL refused to let David get back on board the ship, he had to try and to get back on board. Once on board, he had to deactivate HAL so that he would not be killed by the AI.

I would suggest that you watch the film if you can, it looks dated now but is a fun watch. Also, look out for Leonard Rossiter from Rising Damp who features in the first part of the film.

Artificial intelligence in the real world

The reason I ask the question “Artificial intelligence all that” is because as a blogger I often see advertisements for AI to help in creating blog posts. This disturbs me because it seems that AI could replace the creative aspect of humanity.

When I write a blog post I do it from my experiences through my own eyes. With AI it is now possible to type in a title and AI will write the post for you.

Here is an example of where I asked Artificial intelligence to write a summary about Kate Bush’s single Heathcliff.

This is the Artificial Intelligence Response “Kate Bush’s song “Heathcliff” is a radical interpretation of Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights. In the video for the song, a teenage Kate Bush dances and sings, embodying the character of Cathy. The lyrics are directly borrowed from Catherine Earnshaw Linton’s dialogue in the novel. While the song briefly leads away from literary discussions, it opens valuable conversations about art, cultural literacy, and women artists as visionary creators.  In Brontë’s original novel, Heathcliff is a complex character a solitary child initially resented by Catherine and her brother Hindley. Their intertwined love story grapples with issues of class and family.” Microsoft CoPilot AI

As you can see Artificial intelligence can write competently but Artificial intelligence has not read the book and isn’t able to express the complexity and passion behind both the story and the song, it only gives you the information that it learnt from the internet.

Artificial Intelligence Art

I have seen quite a lot of Artificial Intelligence Art on the Internet, while it looks ok it isn’t perfect yet. There are often many errors in many pictures and images that Artificial Intelligence creates. I have seen photos where the person or characters have too many limbs, sometimes not enough. Artificial Intelligence can’t seem to get the number of fingers right.

I am concerned again that Artificial Intelligence may overtake the creativity of the artist. At the moment there is no risk of that.

One reason I believe that Artificial Intelligence will not completely take over the creativity of the artist is because Artificial Intelligence can only copy, it doesn’t have any emotions that are conveyed in a picture or a work of art.

I asked an Artificial Intelligence to create an image of Mona Lisa dancing. here are the results.

Is Artificial intelligence all that?
Mona Lisa dancing designed by Artificial intelligence DALLE-E3

If you look carefully at the Artificial intelligence image of Mona Lisa dancing you will see that the image is not quite right The arms of some of the dancers are deformed. Mona Lisa’s face is distorted and if you notice the dancer at the end on the left-hand side, her neck is extended and she looks like something from The Exorcist.

I also asked DALLE-E3 to create an image of a lady eating ice cream on a beach. see the results below.

Lady eating an Ice Cream on the beach

The person in this picture doesn’t exist in real life. This is an image that was generated by Artificial intelligence. At a glance, this may look like a model eating ice cream on a beach somewhere. But looking closer you will notice her smile is exaggerated, the arms are not how you would expect and the ice cream on the spoon is defying gravity.

As time goes on AI will get better and it could used to deceive people into believing that the image is of a real person.

Deep Fakes Using AI

What is deep fake

Maybe you have heard the term “Deep Fake”, if you haven’t deep fake is where people on YouTube, TikTok and other video platforms can use Artificial Intelligence to create a video of someone saying or doing something or doing something that would be out of character for them.

one of the most famous deep fake videos is of Morgan Freeman, found on YouTube and created by Diep Nep.

For me, it isn’t just the fact this can be done but it is scary what people can be made to say and seem convincing.

In the future, anyone could use Artificial Intelligence to create a video just by using a photo or a recording of someone’s voice to make a convincing. It will become difficult to distinguish between the real thing and an Artificial Intelligence-created video.

Actors now fear that they may have their faces and voices used in movies without appearing in them. You could have an unknown actor playing in an action movie, and the director or producer then could use Artificial Intelligence to make that unknown actor appear as a well-known star such as Tom Cruise, or Scarlett Johansson.

Artificial Intelligence could have its uses in science

I don’t want to be all doom and gloom about AI, I have just been discussing how it can be used in the creative world.

AI in real-life situations

In the science world, AI may have life-saving or innovative applications. and AI bomb disposal unit would be able to identify and bomb and defuse it without risking lives. AI could be used to diagnose medical issues much quicker and more accurately than a doctor if given the right information and programming.

Many of us are used to having some form of Artificial intelligence in our homes right now such as Alexa, Siri and Google Home, which helps us with automating the temperature of our homes, starting the washing machine, and switching the lights on and off.

I have no problem with AI being used to assist us in that way, but I would never give AI a gun and train them how to use it.

Your Thoughts

I would be interested in reading your thoughts and feedback. Am I being too paranoid about Artificial Intelligence? What are your views on AI? Do you use AI regularly? if so what for?
